Lakeland and Lunesdale physiotherapy and sports injury clinic - South Cumbria North Lancashire charted physiotherapists

About Alex

Chartered Physiotherapist for private treatment in South Cumbria, North Lancashire and North Yorkshire

History

I qualified from The Queens College, Glasgow in 1991, with a BSc Degree in Physiotherapy. I am a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists and the Organization of Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice.

Once qualified, I spent eighteen months within the NHS rotating throughout orthopaedic, medical, surgical and hydrotherapy departments, before dipping my toes into private practice on a part time basis in Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes both in GP surgeries and sports injury clinics. During the next four years I expanded my private practice winning a G.P contract where I set up a totally new service, providing physiotherapy for 6 doctors and their patients during the fund holding era.

I have always had a special interest in the treatment of spinal dysfunction and built upon this knowledge, attending courses and implementing spinal rehabilitation classes for people with recurring/non resolving LBP to good effect. Encouraging and educating a patient to return to full activity after a period of immobility due to back pain is often quite a challenge, as fear of the problem recurring or of pain can be a real obstacle to recovery.

In 2000, my family moved to Lancashire via the Scottish Borders due to my husbands work, and I returned to NHS practice part time, spending the rest of my time looking after my three children whilst they were very young.

In 2004 I began working for a private clinic in Lancaster, followed by increasing hours working as the physiotherapist at Sedbergh School, Cumbria, which I continue to do now. I work alongside a G.P and a small nursing staff, treating a huge and varied caseload in young people aged 13 -18 years. There is a strong sports injury and rehabilitation bent in the work I do at the school, where sport forms a large part of the schools week, and competition is seen as a positive thing!! (Unusual in today's P. C climate)!! The children are highly motivated and have been the most compliant group I have ever worked with! I have the opportunity to learn from some excellent surgeons and doctors, which has helps me enormously, and challenges my treatment protocols.

I spend the remainder of my working week at the Lakeland and Lunesdale Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Practice, Milnthorpe, treating adults and children. The clinic has excellent facilities for both manual and rehabilitation therapy, with three spacious treatment rooms, a gym and welcoming waiting area.

Physiotherapy is a diverse career, and in my work I never know who will walk into the clinic next, and with what condition. I continue to attend post graduate courses to update my knowledge and skills in the many areas associated with musculo-skeletal physiotherapy, which I believe is essential to provide a high quality of care for clients.

Education plays an enormous role in my treatment of patients as I feel strongly that a person should be given the skills available to self manage their condition as far as is possible for those times when the physiotherapist is not available to them ( ie,: the other 23 hours in the day when not having treatment)!!

After qualifying from the Manchester School of Physiotherapy in 1997, I worked in the NHS for four years, predominantly treating musculoskeletal disorders. I then worked in a private hospital for a year, treating orthopaedic inpatients and outpatients with musculoskeletal problems.
